3 Easy (Simple?) Ways to “Diet”

Do you know Vegan Vicki and Paleo Pete?

I know you do.

Vegan Vicki spouts, “If you want to lose weight, then don’t eat animal products! Just look at me!”

Paleo Pete, meanwhile, won’t shut up about bone broth and lard.

Both look the best you’ve ever seen them.

So, what do you do?

Well, first let me say: If you are overweight, the extra pounds you carry are likely more detrimental to your health than any danger an educated person could link to consumption of meat, or soy, or grain, or even aspartame.

If you’re overweight, I advise you to focus on losing weight rather than getting swept up in any diet that has a name.

If you want to focus on making your body healthier, your first step is just to get yourself to a healthy body composition (i.e., healthy proportions of body fat and muscle.) Worry about “toxins” later.

Because here’s the thing…

Losing weight is not the puzzle that it might appear it be.

It’s like a maze with numerous solutions: You can take a lot of routes, but you have to stay focused, tracking with your eyes just a little ahead of your pencil, backtracking here and there perhaps, but all the while knowing the solution is there if you can just commit to the process.

Imagine giving such a maze to 30 second-graders. As soon as Vicki finds a solution, she declares herself the world’s best maze solver. If Pete solves it, too, you better believe that Vicki will pop on over to be sure. And guess what? When she notices that his path is different from hers…well, you can only imagine the ruckus.

When the teacher tells them they are both right…and that a few other classmates have found different, equally viable paths…they remain resolute. Despite visual evidence to the contrary, neither Vicki nor Pete can fathom that they path that worked for them is not the same path that everyone had to take.

Are you seething now, just a little bit, thinking of the Vickis and Petes in your life?

Just because it worked for them doesn’t mean it has to be the solution for YOU.

But the error often made by unsuccessful onlookers is failing to take note of the thing that everyone who successfully solved the maze had in common.

In the maze of weightloss, the common denominator is a calorie deficit. No matter how they did it–by cutting out anything with teeth or by eliminating popcorn–they lowered the number of calories they consumed.

Guess what? No matter how YOU do it, that’s what you’ve got to do, too.

Here are 3 simple ways to “diet.” (Maybe easy, maybe not.)

  1. Increase protein intake to at least .75 gram of protein per pound of body weight. (If you weigh, 200 pounds, eat 150g of protein daily.)
  2. Replace one meal with a protein shake/meal replacement shake. You can’t argue that this is simple. It’s also cheap. You just have to make up your mind to do it.
  3. Replace one serving of grain daily with a vegetable. Usually have rice with dinner? Make it cauliflower rice. (Of course it doesn’t taste the same. That’s not the point. In time, though, your taste buds can adapt to be more accepting of these natural flavors.)
  4. BONUS: Drink more water. Take a big bottle with you everywhere you go. It’s also surprisingly convenient to bide you time when you need to get your thoughts together or feel nervous/awkward.

Stronger Every Day,
